How to Divide an Image Into Blocks on Gimp

The Guillotine feature in the free image editing program GIMP allows you to divide an image into separate blocks. Before you can use the Guillotine, you must create guide lines on the image. These guide lines divide the image into regions; when you activate the Guillotine tool, it slices the image along the lines, dividing it into blocks. You can then edit each block individually and save it as a separate image.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP. Click "File" and "Open;" double-click the image you want to divide into blocks.

    • 2

Click the "Image" menu. Select "Guides" and click "New Guides."

    • 3

Click the "Direction" menu and select "Horizontal." Click "OK." GIMP creates a horizontal guide line on the image.

    • 4

Click the "Image" menu. Hover the mouse over "Guides" and click "New Guides" again.

    • 5

Select "Vertical" from the "Direction" menu and click "OK." GIMP creates a vertical guide line on the image. These two guidelines enable you to slice the image into four blocks; if you want to slice it into more blocks, add additional horizontal and vertical guide lines.

    • 6

Press the "M" key. Click and drag the guide lines to the positions in the image at which you want to divide it.

    • 7

Click "Image" and select "Transform." Click "Guillotine." GIMP divides the image along the guide lines and opens each block in its own window.
