How to Make Triangle Hats

Triangle hats are easy to make and cost next to nothing. Usually made from newspaper, triangle hats are often referred to as pirate or sailor hats. Personalize the hats by choosing from a selection of materials that can be glued on, or decorate them with crayons or markers. Instructions

    • 1

Fold a full section of newspaper in half from top to bottom. The fold will be at the top and the open part nearest you.

    • 2

Fold the paper from side to side so the edges meet. Open it up. Notice the crease down the middle.

    • 3

Fold down the left and right top corners to meet the crease in the middle of the paper. You now have a triangle.

    • 4

Fold up the bottom edge of the triangle. The fold should run along the bottom edge of the two folded corners.

    • 5

Flip the paper over. Fold up the other edge to match the edge on the other side.

    • 6

Decorate your triangle hat with an assortment of materials such as trim, ribbons, pompoms and buttons to glue on, or use crayons or markers to make designs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Run your finger along each fold you make to produce crisp creases.

  • Experiment with different types of paper such as gift wrap or butcher paper.

  • Create different sizes of hats by using different sizes of paper. The bigger the piece of paper you use, the larger your hat will be.

  • Use two sections of newspaper to make a sturdier hat.
