Instructions

    • 1

Cover your table or counter top with bubble wrap that is long enough to accommodate the scarf you want to make.

    • 2

Lay a piece of silk gauze fabric or a premade silk gauze scarf on top of the bubble wrap.

    • 3

Pull one or several pieces of colorful wool roving apart. Make thin strips that are somewhat transparent with the roving; make a large pile of these.

    • 4

Layer the wool pieces on top of the scarf, covering its surface entirely and layering them on top of one another to ensure proper coverage.

    • 5

Put on heavy rubber gloves and fill a cup with hot, soapy water. Pour the water onto the wool and use your hands to rub it in, making sure to fully saturate the scarf's surface.

    • 6

Start at one short end of the scarf and roll the bubble wrap with the scarf inside it. Create a tube shape in the rolling process.

    • 7

Use your hands to knead the tube of bubble wrap on the counter top. Knead it several times in one direction, then turn it over and knead some more.

    • 8

Flatten out the bubble wrap roll and check for felting. When the wool pieces have fused together and stick firmly onto the silk then it is ready; if they are still separated, roll and knead again.

    • 9

Turn the scarf over to expose the backside. Fold over the pieces of wool that overlap the edges and arrange them on the backside of the silk. Fill in any empty spaces with more strips of roving.

    • 10

Repeat the process of soaking, rolling and kneading the scarf to felt the backside.

    • 11

Remove the scarf from the bubble wrap when it has felted entirely. Rinse it in a cold water wash then hang it to dry.
