Lining a Wig to Hide Hair

Lining a Wig to Hide Hair thumbnail
A neon wig can brighten up a club or party costume.

Wigs first came into fashion in ancient Egypt when men and women found they could tolerate the heat better with shaved heads, and wore headpieces made of human hair, wool or vegetable fibers during religious ceremonies. The wig today is used to hide hair loss, provide an array of hairstyle options and can also be worn with a costume. While a wig can give you perfect supermodel hair, it can destroy your look if it's not applied properly, causing stray hairs to peek out from your hairline. A wig can be lined with a wig cap to hide natural hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Brush out your hair and use hair clips to secure any short layers and bangs away from your hairline.

    • 2

Pull a wig cap over your head from front to back. Make sure to pull it down to your eyebrows first to catch any fly away hair. Then gently pull back the wig cap from the back of your head until it has regressed to your natural hair line.

    • 3

Tuck any excess hair length evenly into the sides and back of the wig cap.

    • 4

Clean your hairline with rubbing alcohol and use a razor to shave any stray hairs from your hairline or neck area so that the adhesive will stick well.

    • 5

Apply a generous amount of scalp protector to your hairline and allow time for the scalp protector to dry.

    • 6

Apply double-sided wig tape all around your hairline using your wig cap as a guide. Stick tape onto the nape of the neck area without yet peeling the cover off of the upside.

    • 7

Apply one to three coats of wig adhesive to the front hairline for extra hold. Allow time for the adhesive to dry, changing from wet to tacky.

    • 8

Use scissors to cut off any excess lace from your wig. Cut as much off as you can without cutting the hair. Tie your wig into a ponytail if the hair is long.

    • 9

Place the wig on top of your head, aligning it properly. Press the very end of the lace from the wig down into the very edge of the adhesive with an all purpose comb. Press it down one section at a time from the top of your hairline down to each ear.

    • 10

Peel the covers off of the tape at the nape of your neck. Apply scalp protector and adhesive to the nape of your neck as you did to your hairline in Steps 5 and 7.

    • 11

Pull the back of your wig down over the tape and adhesive and press it down using your comb.

    • 12

Use adhesive remover to remove the wig from your scalp when you no longer wish to wear it.
