How to Make an Audio Loop in EXS24
Apple's Logic Pro and Logic Express come with dozens of built-in instrument and effect plugins exclusive to the platform, including a comprehensive sampler instrument called the EXS24. Using the EXS24's instrument editing facility, individual audio samples can be truncated, stretched and looped, among other functions. Looping specific samples within the EXS24 is useful for a variety of applications, from extending a pitched instrument sound indefinitely to producing many of the common looping effects heard in numerous genres of electronic music.

1
Open Logic. When the project template dialog appears, click the icon labeled "Empty Project." Logic will open and display its default project template.
-
2
Select "Software Instrument" from the pop-up menu that appears and click "Create." A software instrument track will be created in Logic's "Arrange" area.
-
-
3
Click the first gray box, known as a "flip menu," below "I/O" in the track's channel strip. The channel strip is located immediately to the left of the "Arrange" area. Select "EXS24" from the menu. Logic will instantiate the EXS24 on the track and its interface will appear.
-
4
Click the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner of the EXS24 interface. The "EXS24 Instrument Editor" window will appear.
-
5
Open the "View" menu in the "EXS24 Instrument Editor" window and select "View All." This will cause the editor to display all of the adjustable parameters for the sample instrument.
-
6
Open the "Zone" menu in the "EXS24 Instrument Editor" window and select "New Zone." A new instrument zone will be created and listed as "Zone #1" in the list in this window.
-
7
Click the black disclosure triangle in the "Audio File" column next to "Zone #1" and select "Load Audio Sample" from the pop-up menu. A file browser dialog will appear.
-
8
Navigate to the audio sample you want to loop in the file browser dialog and double-click it. The EXS24 will load the sample and place it on the grid above the image of a keyboard at the bottom of the "EXS24 Instrument Editor" window.
-
9
Change the value of the MIDI note associated with the sample by click-holding on the first box in the column labeled "Key." Drag up or down to change the MIDI note value. For example, if you want the sample to be triggered when you press middle C on a MIDI controller keyboard, continue holding the mouse button and drag until the value in this box reads "C3."
-
10
Place a check mark in the box in the "Loop" column to turn looping on.
-
11
Press the key associated with the sample established in Step 9 to hear the sample play back looped. The sample will loop indefinitely as long as this key is held. If the sample does not loop, adjust the "Start" and "End" parameters in the "Loop" column to reflect the same values seen in the "Start" and "End" boxes under the "Sample" column by click-holding and dragging up or down.
