How to Frame Lace

Displaying lace -- whether antique, vintage, modern or your own own creation -- can be a tricky task. If you simply leave it on a table as a decoration, guests may skim past it rather than truly admire it. This is especially true if the lace is of a similar color to the tablecloth or other surface on which you place it. Don't worry, however. You are not stuck forever wishing your guests would notice your beautiful lace. Framing it with a contrasting background makes a striking piece of art to be admired and enjoyed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the lace onto a mat in a contrasting color. This mat should be the appropriate size to fit the frame in question. Arrange the lace how you wish it to appear in the final piece.

    • 2

Poke a sturdy needle, threaded with thin thread, through the back of the mat. The thread you use should be the same color as your lace in order to make it less noticeable. Pierce the needle gently through a hole in the lace and loop the thread around a strand or two of the lace. Push the needle back through the mat.

    • 3

Poke the needle through the mat in another place, and catch some lace again. Return the needle through the mat. Repeat this process until the lace is held securely in place, and then tie off the thread.

    • 4

Place the matted lace into the frame atop the glass. Use spacers to hold the glass away from the lace. Put the backing into the frame behind the mat and secure it into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can cover the mat with velvet if you wish. This can provide a more vibrant, richer backing for the lace.

  • Another option is to use double-sided tape to secure the edges of the lace to the back of the mat. This saves you the trouble of sewing the lace to the mat, but it also means that the edges of the lace don't show up in the frame.
