How to Make Striped Scarves With Many Colors

Single or multi-colored fringe may be added to the finished scarf.

Making a crocheted scarf is a simple project, well-suited to novice crocheters. Only two basic stitches are required, the chain and the single crochet stitch. If you want to make a rainbow striped scarf with longitudinal stripes or one with transverse stripes, like Dr. Who wears, you will have to periodically change yarn colors. The color change is done end of the row you are working on. Of the many techniques for changing yarn colors, crocheting the new color onto the previous color, then tying the yarns together is one of the simplest methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet a chain to the length of the scarf if you want the stripes to be longitudinal. For a scarf with transverse stripes, crochet a chain that is the desired width of the finished scarf. Chain one, then turn on this and consecutive rows.

    • 2

Do one single-crochet stitch in each chain, until you reach the end of the chain. Each row of single-crochet stitches is about 1/2 inch tall, depending on your stitch tension. Change yarn colors after the first row, or add additional rows, depending on how wide you want the stripes to be.

    • 3

Change yarn colors after you complete the last row of the color that you are using. To start the new color, yarn over with the new color and draw the hook through the loop. Leave a 4-inch tail on the new yarn. Do one chain stitch. Do one single-crochet stitch in the first stitch in the previous row. Cut the yarn from the previous row, leaving a 4-inch tail. Tie the two tails together.

    • 4

Single crochet across the row. Repeat rows and color changes until the scarf reaches the desired size.

    • 5

Complete the last stitch in the last row, tie off the yarn. Use a crochet hook to weave the tails into the scarf. A yellow tail is woven into a yellow stripe. Red tails are woven into red stripes, and so on.
