Display a hockey jersey in a glass case to preserve it for years to come.

If you have an ice hockey jersey from your playing days or a signed jersey from a professional that you want to display, you can build a custom display case for the jersey. The glass case will allow other people to see your jersey and prevent damage to the fabric from the elements over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your hockey jersey flat on a table with the arms hanging down at the sides. Measure the length and width of the jersey. Fold the bottom of the jersey and the sleeves up so the name and number on the back of the jersey are still visible.

    • 2

Buy a sturdy wooden frame, with glass included, that is large enough for the jersey to fit inside. Remove the backing from the frame and set it aside.

    • 3

Cut 2-inch hardwood trim pieces into four lengths that match the sides of the frame; hardwood trim will ensure that the case is sturdy, rather than flimsy and too flexible. Nail the wooden pieces together to form a rectangular box shape.

    • 4

Paint the wooden frame with white primer and allow it to dry completely, eight hours or overnight. Paint the frame with white exterior paint and allow the paint to dry another eight to 12 hours.

    • 5

Measure a piece of cardboard with the same outer dimensions as the wooden rectangular box and cut it out with a utility knife. Cut out a piece of black velvet that is two inches wider and longer than the cardboard. Cover the cardboard with the piece of velvet. Fold the edges of the velvet over to the back of the cardboard and use hot glue to secure it in place.

    • 6

Use a staple gun to secure the fabric-covered cardboard to the back of the wooden frame so that the fabric faces the inside.

    • 7

Pin the jersey to the fabric-covered piece of cardboard. You can have the jersey so that the front faces forward, or the back, with the name and number on the jersey, is displayed.

    • 8

Attach the purchased frame to the wooden frame you made by putting two hinges on the left side of the wooden rectangular box, flush with the sides, and a small Norfolk latch on the right side of the rectangular box. This will allow you to open the display case and remove the jersey when needed.

    • 9

Attach hooks to the back of the rectangular box at the top, one on each side. Hammer nails or brads into the wall the same distance from each other as the hooks are on the back of the case. Hang the case on the wall.
