How to Design a Hair Salon's Floor Plan

The look and feel of the salon depends on the finalized floor plan.

Planning is an important part of starting your own hair salon. Before you open your doors, you have to plan how your salon will look, starting with the floor plan. A good floor plan allows you to model and decorate your salon just the way you want while maximizing space for your equipment and clientele. Designing a good floor plan isn’t easy, and it may take several attempts before you can create the final plan.

Instructions

1. Determine the size of your hair salon’s floor space, the type of services you plan to offer, the number of work stations needed and their overall size. Create a mental reference by visiting other salons and studying the way they’re laid out.

2. Create and record measurements of the equipment you plan to use in your salon. Determining the size of your equipment allows you to optimize your salon’s space.

3. Sketch a scaled outline of the floor plan on a sheet of graph paper. Create scale cutouts from card stock representing the salon’s furnishings and move them around as desired. This will help you determine the right layout for your salon. Keep in mind legal door and passageway widths, such as the standard 54 inch guideline, to properly accommodate your clientele.
