How to Make Resins With a Mold

How to Make Resins With a Mold thumbnail
Many types of jewelry and beads are made using resin.

There are two basic resin types commonly used to cast molds. Polyester resin is a liquid plastic that hardens with a catalyst. Epoxy resin is a two-part mixture used for crafting and has a glass look when finished. Both polyester and epoxy resin can be dyed with the appropriate dye for the particular resin you’re using. You may also embed items into your resin mixture; this can make memorable keepsakes for yourself or others.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions included in your resin package. Set up a table with everything you will need since you won’t want to stop and find a needed item while you’re already in the process.

    • 2

Spray your mold with the mold release spray. This will prevent it from sticking to the mold. Always use a release spray unless the mold instructions say otherwise.

    • 3

Measure the resin into your mixing bowl or cup, and combine catalyst if needed. Stir the resin using a disposable stir stick.

    • 4

Pour the resin mixture into your prepared mold. Cover the mold with plastic wrap to prevent dust from settling into your finished resin. The length of curing time will vary depending on the type and brand of resin you use.

    • 5

Remove the cured resin product from your mold after specified curing time according to the resin instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove any air bubbles by pricking with a pin or toothpick while the resin is still in liquid form.

  • Cast your mold only in well-ventilated areas since most resins produce toxic fumes.
