How to Make Heart Appliques

Add heart appliques to decorative and holiday craft projects.

A heart-shaped applique, whether large or small, is timeless. They appeal to many people either looking for an antique, traditional, funky or modern decal. Also, heart appliques can be made from various types of fabric and in any color you wish. Dress up accessories such as tote bags, jackets and purses with heart appliques. Alternatively, you can use heart appliques to patch holes in your garments using only a few supplies and materials from the craft store.

Things You'll Need

• Paper heart template
• Scissors
• Fabric
• Pins
• Fusible webbing
• Iron
• Needle
• Thread

Instructions

1. Create a heart template on a piece of paper. Draw the heart freehand or trace over a picture of a heart. Cut out the heart template.

2. Pin the template to the fabric of your choice. Cut the heart shape out of the fabric by using the template as a guide.

3. Trace the heart template onto a sheet of fusible webbing. Cut it out.

4. Turn the fabric heart upside down and iron on the fusible webbing. This backing adds strength to the heart applique.

5. Sew the heart applique onto your craft project or clothing using needle and thread.
