How to Make Fake Bruises With Pastels

Pastels are a versatile art material that can be manipulated more readily than many other art mediums. Because of the loose application of chalk pastels, colors can be smudged and faded effectively and with minimal effort. These qualities are what make pastels a successful alternative to makeup when looking to create special effects. Fake bruises done in pastel can be very convincing and can be set with hairspray to avoid further smudging.

Instructions

    • 1

Lightly outline the area you want to look bruised in a medium tone. Use a dark tone, like brown or dark blue, to draw a few vein-like lines.

    • 2

Go over the whole area with a tan or green slightly darker than the person's natural skin tone.

    • 3

Smudge the area with your finger until the darker lines blend in.

    • 4

Add darker and lighter tones in asymmetrical shapes, smudging in between each layer until the bruise looks believable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different colors until you reach the bruise tone that looks best for your project. Dark purple, browns, dark blues and deep reds all make for convincing bruise effects.

  • Do not use pastels on the face -- while non-toxic pastels are not dangerous, they may cause irritation on sensitive areas like the eyes.
