How to Create Christmas Ornament Patterns With GIMP
E-cards can be created at a website and sent as an email attachment, but many people still prefer to give the real thing. While people frequently purchase cards from a store, some crafters prefer to make their own customized cards. If you are working in GIMP to create your a personalized festive Christmas card, you can use your own clip art to create patterned Christmas ornaments to decorate the borders.

Start the GIMP application. Select “File” from the menu and choose “New.” In the dialog, make both the width and height 100 pixels. Set the “Fill With” to “Transparency.” Click “OK.”

Select the “Ellipse” tool and use it to draw a large circular selection that fills the canvas. Change the “Foreground” color to white and the “Background” color to what you want for the ornament.

Use the “Gradient” tool to drag a “Radial” gradient from the upper left corner of the selection to just past the center. Go to the “Layers” panel and click on the “New Layer” button.

Use the Brush tool to paint a Christmas tree, angel or other Christmas shape on the ornament. Change colors as you work and adjust the size of the brush to get the result you want.

Go to the top of the “Layers” panel and change the “Mode” to Multiply.” Right-click on the top layer and choose “Merge Visible.”

Select “File” from the menu and click “Open.” Browse to and then open the card or other document you want to add the image to as a pattern.

Select the “Clone” toolbar. In the tool options, click “Image.” Go back to the ornament document, hold down the “CTRL” key and click in the center of the ornament.

Go back to the other document and start clicking where you want to place the ornaments. Save your work.
