How to Knit from a Heart Chart
Hearts can be used in many kinds of knitting projects including hats, scarves and afghans. The finished project will vary depending on the size of the knitting needles and the type of yarn used. Two different colors of yarn are needed to contrast the background color with the color of the heart. Or, use the same color yarn and two different types of stitches to shape the heart. Sometimes it is easier for knitters to follow a simple heart chart rather than interpreting the traditional instructions for knitting hearts in a project.

1
Determine the number of stitches needed to make one heart. If more than one heart is required in your project, multiply the number of stitches for one heart by the number of horizontal hearts that will go across your project. Cast on the required amount of stitches with the background color.
-
2
Read the chart from bottom to top, beginning at the lower right corner and working your way to the top left corner. Start your chart with the heart pointing down. Determine from the chart whether the symbols denote knit stitches or purl stitches, and knit according to these symbols.

3
Knit stitches for the heart and purl stitches for the background on the right side of your project. Reverse for the wrong side by purling stitches for the heart and knitting stitches for the background. Ignore the color changes if you are using the same color yarn throughout.
-
4
Change colors whenever the chart indicates symbols for the heart or background color. Use a slip knot to join the new color of yarn with the old on the first color change. Continue knitting with the new color, and twist the two colors around each other on succeeding rows of color changes.
-
5
Weave in and cut all loose ends once the heart chart is completed and the heart color yarn is no longer needed.
