GIMP's Crop Tool acts as a digital pair of scissors.

The free graphic design program GIMP contains a variety of digital editing tools including a crop function. Once you have downloaded the editor onto your computer you are ready to begin cropping photographs, clip art and other image-related files. The Crop Tool will let you remove unwanted edges and transform ordinary graphics into polished pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP and open the first image you want to crop by clicking on File and Open. The image will appear in a GIMP workbook.

    • 2

Select the Crop Tool located in the main toolbox.

    • 3

Double-click within the workbook on the top-left corner of the part of the image you want to preserve and drag your cursor across the screen to the bottom-right corner of the portion of the image you want to keep. Click once within the workbook to finalize the selection and complete the crop.

    • 4

Save your cropped image by clicking File and Save As.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to keep a fixed aspect ratio when cropping, check the box "Fixed" which is located in the bottom-half of the main toolbox.

  • Use a unique file-name when saving your cropped image if you do not want to replace the edited version with the original file.
