How to Center a Mirror in a Locker Site

Center your locker mirror for quick makeup and hair fixes before or after school.

Locker mirrors provide a convenient way to periodically check your appearance before going to class or at the beginning of the school day. However, it's important to mount them in the center of the inside locker to leave room for other items and make sure they hang straight. After all, it's difficult to see your true reflection if a mirror is crooked or hangs slightly off to either side. Additionally, many students like to put pictures of friends or family as well as a class schedule inside the lockers. Centering your mirror inside your locker will leave room for other items and keep you from seeing a crooked reflection.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside area of your locker door and the size of your mirror. Make sure you have two accurate measurements so that you can place the mirror in the center of the area where it will hang. Write your measurements down so that you know how much space is needed for each border around the mirror. For example, your mirror may be five inches by seven inches and the area it will hang in might by twenty four inches by twelve inches.

    • 2

Calculate the area you need to have around each side of your mirror by subtracting the space needed for the mirror from the total area available. For example, if your mirror is five inches by seven inches and the area it will hang in is twenty four inches by twelve inches, you should subtract five from twenty-four and seven from twelve. Do this for each side. You can then determine that you have nineteen inches on two sides and five inches on the other two sides.

    • 3

Divide the space available in half on each side and make a mark inside the locker to show you where the mirror should hang. For example, if you have nineteen inches on the top and bottom sides and five inches on the right and left sides, you should place two marks at 9 1/2 inches along the top and bottom and another at two marks at 2 1/2 inches along the left and right sides. Take care to measure from the inside edges of the locker to center the mirror perfectly and verify your measurements.

Use removable putty on the inside of the locker to make sure you don't leave any lasting marks on school property. Place four small pieces of putty at each corner where your mirror will hang, then hang the mirror inside your locker and check to make sure it stays. Do not use any permanent mounting fixtures, as many schools do not allow them and you may be charged a fee for removal at the end of the year.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some locker mirrors are magnetic, which eliminates the need for mounting putty.

  • Personalize your mirror with stickers or a cardboard frame with your name on it for added fun.
