How to Make a Homemade Jewelry Holder That Fits in Your Purse

If your purse is full and disorderly, a jewelry organizer may help.

Portable jewelry organizers can save you from lost earrings and tangled necklaces while on the go, either traveling or just going between home, the gym and the office. You can purchase a manufactured organizer, but by making your own, you can customize it to fit your everyday purse or gym bag, as well as add a touch of your own personal style. Choose patterned fabrics in bright colors for a touch of fun and to make it easy to find in your bag.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two strips of 6-by-10-inch fabric. (The size is a suggestion. You can adapt this dimension to fit your needs.)

    • 2

Iron a 1/4- to 1/2-inch hem all the way around both strips.

    • 3

Lay the two strips of fabric against each other with the wrong side facing. Pin in place.

    • 4

Separate the ribbons into 2 pairs and line up the pairs. Slide the bottom inch of each ribbon pair in between the pinned strips of fabric on the top, about 2 inches in from the edges. Pin in place.

    • 5

Sew the fabric together all around the edges, removing pins as you sew.

    • 6

Cut three pieces of 2-by-4-inch fabric.

    • 7

Iron a 1/4- to 1/2-inch hem around the pieces of fabric and sew the hem in place.

    • 8

Place one of the 2-by-4-inch pieces of hemmed fabric centered about 1 inch from the bottom of the 6-by-10-inch fabric. Sew around 3 sides, leaving the top side open. Use a pin to pierce several holes for earrings in the pocket you have just created. You can push earrings through the holes and reach into the pocket to attach the backs.

    • 9

Align the other two 2-by-4-inch fabric pieces above the pocket, each about 1 inch apart.

    • 10

Attach the bottom parts of the snaps, according to the package directions, to the larger section of fabric where the outer ends of the two unattached smaller pieces will be.

    • 11

Attach the top parts of the snaps, according to the package directions, to the ends of the two smaller pieces of fabric.

    • 12

Snap the pieces in place. Unsnap either end and loop necklaces and bracelets around the fabric. Snap closed and the jewelry will stay put.

    • 13

Roll the completed jewelry case up from the bottom (the non-ribbon side) to the top (the ribbon side) so that it makes a tube shape. Tie it closed with the ribbons and slip it into your bag.
