How to Bulge Images in GIMP

How to Bulge Images in GIMP thumbnail
Use GIMP to digitally "grow" a portion of an image.

The free graphics editor GIMP has a “distort” filter that you can use to "grow" a section of a digital image. The resulting object will look swollen or bulging. Adjust the effect's settings to produce subtle or dramatic changes. Preview the changes before implementing them and reset the image if the resulting bulges do not meet your expectations.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP and open the image you want to bulge by clicking “File” and then “Open.”

    • 2

Select the “Filters” tab and click on “Distorts.” Select “IWarp” and a dialog will open. The "Settings" tab is displayed by default.

    • 3

Click on the “Deform Mode” of "Grow." Double-click and drag the thumb of the Deform Radius scrollbar to change the radius of your bulge. Moving the scrollbar thumb to the left decreases the radius; moving the thumb to the right increases the radius. Similarly, move the thumb of the “Deform Amount” scrollbar to change the intensity of the bulging effect.

    • 4

Click within the image preview to add a single bulge. Double-click and drag your cursor across an object to add a string of bulging motions. Click "Reset" to discard the bulge effect and revert to your original image. When satisfied, click "OK."

    • 5

Save your edited image by clicking “File” and “Save As.”
