How to Delay a Job Offer

How to Delay a Job Offer thumbnail
Be professional throughout the entire job interview process.

Receiving a job offer can be both exhilarating and a huge relief. However, if you have been interviewing with several different companies, you may be interested in more than one position. Juggling job offers can be tricky; you need the time to consider all options without burning any bridges by delaying your response. Professionalism and courtesy are key when interacting with possible employers.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell the employer that has made the offer that you are appreciative for being chosen and that you are interested in the position, without actually accepting. Avoid accepting a position and then reneging at a later date; this is considered unprofessional behavior and can possibly damage your reputation.

    • 2

Explain to the offering company that you have received several offers and would like a little time to take each one into consideration so that you are able to make the best choice. It should not be a surprise to the employer that you are speaking with other companies.

    • 3

Suggest a time frame in which you will respond to the employer’s offer. Acceptable time frames are usually around a few to days to possibly a week. Alternatively, it is appropriate to ask the employer on what day she needs an answer.

    • 4

Provide an answer to the offering company within the time frame that you both agreed to. Even if you turn the offer down, you may want to work for that company in the future.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treat the employer with respect. Remember that it is as important for her to fill the position as it is for you to find employment.
