How to Make a Family Collage for Kids

How to Make a Family Collage for Kids thumbnail
A family collage can help children stay connected with distant relatives.

A family collage is a creative way to reminisce and celebrate family. Use the project to tell children special stories they haven't heard before or memories from before they can remember. The collage can also be a creative way to review and name family members your young child might not see regularly. Older kids can recall memories with everyone and label their own pictures, making each collage individually special.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a theme for the collage. Use pictures from a particular event, like a birthday, a family vacation or a sporting activity the whole family attended. Create a theme around a favorite sport or other hobby. Choose pictures from one particular season or holiday. Have children cut out only people's heads and draw the bodies, draw a scene and then place people into it, or overlap pictures, creating a puzzle in which they can hunt for particular faces.

    • 2

Cut out pictures of family members, pets and special friends. Young children will need an adult's help with the scissors. Cut around each person's shape, leaving out the background.

    • 3

Glue the pictures to poster board. Place them randomly on the page, so the entire page is covered. If you have an abundance of photos, overlap pieces.

    • 4

Label each picture with a marker, if you wish, or add extra interest by tracing around pictures with marker.

    • 5

Decorate a border with markers or glitter. Create a colorful margin around the perimeter or embellish the corners. If desired, add a title like, "The Johnson Family," to the top of the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure adequate supervision during the cutting phase of the project.
