Use this method to sync as many iOS devices as you want.

The Contacts applications on the iPhone and iPad can be wirelessly synchronized using a free online Google account as an intermediary. This removes the need for a computer to copy contact details between the two devices' address books. It also ensures that all your address books are fully up to date, as any additions or changes made to your contacts' details using the iPhone, iPad or Google account are automatically synced whenever the Contacts app is launched.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone by tapping its icon on the Home screen.

    • 2

Tap the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" button, followed by the "Add Account" button.

    • 3

Tap the "Microsoft Exchange" button and enter your Google account username in the "Email" and "Username" fields. Enter your Google account password in the "Password" box and tap the "Next" button.

    • 4

Tap the "Cancel" button in the "Cannot Verify Server" dialog box. The iPhone returns to the "Exchange" screen. This isn't a fault, but a necessary part of the setup procedure.

    • 5

Type "m.google.com" into the "Server" field that has appeared on the "Exchange" screen and tap the "Next" button again. The iPhone will verify the server this time.

    • 6

Slide the "Contacts" switch to "On" and tap the "Done" button. Your iPhone's contact entries are copied to the online Google address book.

    • 7

Repeat this procedure on the iPad, using the same Google account details when adding the "Microsoft Exchange" account. The iPhone's address book entries in your Google account will be copied to the iPad when the Contacts switch is set to "On."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a Google account you can set one up on the iPad or iPhone by visiting "Google.com" in the Safari app and clicking "Sign Up." Setting up a Google account in this way means you still don't need a computer to complete the procedure.

  • Any additions or changes made to your Contacts entries on the iPhone, iPad or Google address book will be reflected on all devices whenever the app launches.
