      Examine the split of the tree and determine the damage. Prune the tree, if necessary, to reduce the weight on a branch or part of the tree.

      Build support by putting the split back together and holding it in place to do the rest of the repairs and sealing. Use twine or rope to temporarily hold the split together. Remove promptly so you do not choke or kill the tree.

      Winch the tree together above the split. Drill through the split and drill brass bolts to secure. The tree will heal and grow over the steel eventually.
