How to Make a PVC Sliding Didgeridoo
The didgeridoo is an African percussion instrument that you play by sticking your lips over the hole on one end and then by vibrating your lips. The didgeridoo amplifies the vibration. You can obtain a didgeridoo from a well stocked music store or order one online. However, if you like to make your own instruments, you can make an adaptation of a didgeridoo with PVC. You can adapt it by installing a sliding sleeve that allows you to adjust the pitch of the note you play while you play.
Things You'll Need
- 2-inch diameter PVC pipe
- Miter saw
- 600-grit sandpaper
- 4-inch diameter PVC pipe
- PVC cleaner
- PVC glue
- 2 to 4-inch PVC adaptor
- Circular saw

1
Cut a piece of 2-inch diameter PVC pipe to a 3-inch length with a miter saw. Rub 600-grit sandpaper around the ends of the PVC pipe to remove the burs caused by cutting the pipe.
-
2
Cut a piece of 4-inch diameter PVC pipe to a length of 36 inches with the miter saw. Again, remove the burs from the end of the pipe with 600-grit sandpaper. Remove the lid from the PVC cleaner. On the lid you will locate a brush. Rub the brush around the outside ends of each pipe to remove dirt and oil. Dip the brush back into the cleaner as needed to keep the brush wet while you clean the pipes.

Apply PVC glue to one end of the 2-inch diameter pipe and then apply PCV glue to one end of the 4-inch diameter pipe. Apply PVC glue to both ends of the 2-inch to 4-inch PVC adaptor. The lid on the bottle of PVC glue has a brush, just like the PVC cleaner.

Press the 2-inch diameter pipe into the 2-inch end of the adaptor and then slide the 4-inch PVC pipe into the 4-inch end of the adaptor. You will use the 2-inch end of the didgeridoo as the mouthpiece.

5
Cut a 4-inch diameter PVC pipe to a length of 36 inches with the miter saw and then cut down the length of the pipe on one side with a circular saw. Remove all of the burs with 600-grit sandpaper.
-
6
Slide the cut pipe into the didgeridoo.

7
Put your mouth on the mouthpiece and vibrate your lips to create sound. This may take some practice. Adjust the sleeve in or out until you achieve a tone that suits you. As you get comfortable with the instrument, you can hold the didgeridoo with your hands, vibrate your mouth and then move the sleeve with your feet to create a trombone type sound.
