How to Crop in InDesign

Cropping is a method of hiding portions of an image in graphic design programs. In graphic design programs, cropping discards the information excluded from the cropped selection. This is different from masking, since the mask can be toggled on and off to reveal the hidden information. Cropping in Adobe's InDesign uses the selection tool and the rectangular frame automatically present around your imported graphic.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click the "Direct Selection" tool.

    • 2

Select the corner of the rectangular frame on the side you want to cut down.

    • 3

Drag the corner into the middle of the image until only the section you want to keep is highlighted. Hold the shift button to preserve the image's original aspect ratio.

    • 4

Press "Enter" to confirm the crop, then save the image with a new filename to avoid overwriting the original.
