How to Make Creamy Mortar
The simplest way to mix up mortar is by using a premixed bag, which includes cement, lime and sand. All you need to do is pour it in a wheelbarrow or cement mixer and add water. If you decide to make your own mortar, you need to purchase each item separately. Using a small cement mixing machine is the best way to achieve a creamy mortar. Rent one of these machines from a hardware store. Does this Spark an idea?

Pour a bag of premixed mortar into either a wheelbarrow or portable cement mixer. If you are making your own mortar, measure cement, lime and sand into the wheelbarrow or cement mixer in a 1:1:6 ratio. For example, a 5-gallon bucket of cement, a 5-gallon bucket of lime and six 5-gallon buckets of sand.

Slowly add water to the mortar in either the wheelbarrow or the small cement mixer. A bag of cement generally takes about 2 gallons. If it is in a wheelbarrow, use a shovel to blend the water into the mixture. If it is in a cement mixer, plug the mixer in an electrical outlet and allow the mixer to turn for at least three minutes.

Begin using the mortar within an hour after you make it. If it starts to thicken, add a bit more water to the mortar and stir it. Any mortar that becomes too thick to use two hours after making it should be disposed of.
