How to Figure Out How Many Holes for a Faucet
Before you install your faucet, figure out how many holes you need to drill in the countertop. This saves you from drilling too many holes in those new, expensive countertops. It's not hard to figure out how many holes your faucet requires. Since the holes you're going to be cutting are to allow water connections to the faucet from below the sink, all you need to do is figure out the number of hose connections on the bottom of the faucet. Remove the faucet from the packaging and turn it over. Count the number of shafts that house the faucet hoses on the bottom of the faucet. If the hoses come through two shafts, you need two holes. If the hoses come through a single, central shaft, you only need one hole.

Check the type of faucet you are buying. A single-handle faucet typically has one base shaft which houses all the faucet hoses. A double-handle faucet usually has at least two shafts, one for the hot water and the other for the cold water. It might have three shafts in some cases, including one for the spout and drain plug rod. If it has three shafts, you need three holes.

Check to see if the faucet includes a sprayer attachment installed on the side of the faucet. If the faucet has a sprayer, add one more hole to the total number of holes required to mount the faucet. A pull-out spray kitchen faucet won't need an additional hole because the sprayer is part of the faucet, not an attachment.

Check your manual to confirm the number of holes necessary for installation. The manual has a diagram or template showing the number of and measurements for holes needed to install the faucet.
