How to Knit a Phone Cozy
A cozy is a knitted cover that protects the object inside. Just as tea cozies cover tea kettles, a phone cozy covers your phone and keeps it safe from scratches. Even beginning knitters can create a phone cozy with a few basic skills. To make one, you need to know how to make the knit stitch if you wish to work in garter or the knit and purl stitches for stockinette. You must also know how to cast on, bind off, seam your knitting and sew a button with thread.

1
Look at the label on the yarn that you're using. Find the number of stitches per inch and the suggested needle size. Select the needles of that size from your collection.
-
2
Measure the length and width of your phone. Multiply the number of stitches per inch from Step 1 by your phone's width measurement. Add an extra 1/2 inch worth of stitches to the measurement for a 1/4-inch seam allowance on both sides.
-
-
3
Cast on the number of stitches that you need. For example, if your phone is three inches wide and your yarn knits at six stitches per inch, cast on 18 stitches, plus three stitches for a 1/2-inch seam allowance. This would give you a total of 21 stitches.
-
4
Knit in stockinette or garter stitch until you have a rectangle that's twice as long as your phone. Knit an additional inch for a button flap.
-
5
Subtract two to three stitches from your cast-on number, then divide by two to determine where to center the buttonhole. For example, if your cast-on was 21 stitches and you want to make a three-stitch buttonhole, knit nine stitches, bind off three stitches for the buttonhole, and knit nine more stitches.
-
6
Use the backward loop cast-on method in the next row to cast on the same number of stitches that you bound off. Using the above example, knit nine stitches, use backward loop to cast on three stitches and knit nine more stitches. To do a backward loop cast-on, twist a loop of the working yarn around your finger and hang it on the needle.
-
7
Knit another 1/2 inch. Bind off all stitches.
-
8
Lay your phone on the knitted strip. Fold the strip over the phone from the bottom, leaving the 1 1/2-inch buttonhole section at the top. Pin the sides with straight pins.
-
9
Seam the sides up to the bottom of the button flap with a darning needle and yarn. Remove the straight pins.
-
10
Fold the top over to determine where to sew the button. Thread a sewing needle with regular thread and sew the button onto the front of the cozy.
