If you're trying to find the location where a photo on Facebook was taken, you can see if the person who uploaded it to Facebook included any geographical information, check the person's other posts from around the same time to find more information or do an online image search to see if you can find the photo elsewhere with more information.

Facebook  Location Services

When someone uploads a photo to Facebook, he or she is given the option to add the location where that photograph was taken through Facebook Location Services.

If someone did so, you'll see a place name and map pin symbol at the end of the post's caption. Facebook photo locations typically link to a brief description of the place itself. Click the place name to find out more information about that place, see where it is on a map and even get directions there.

Looking for Clues in Other Posts

If someone posted a picture without tagging a location and didn't put anything in the caption that indicates where it was taken, you may still be able to find clues in other posts from that person.

Click the person's name in the photo. Scroll down the profile page to the posts added around the same time as the photo. See if you find anything that might indicate where the person was around that time.

Of course, if you feel comfortable, you can always send the person who took the photo a Facebook message or get in touch some other way to ask where the photo was taken.

Image Search with Google Image Search

If you're unable to find any clues on Facebook itself as to where a photo was taken, you can use an online image search tool to see if you can find the photo or a similar one elsewhere online.

Google Image Search is one popular tool for doing this.

  • Right click on the photo you want to learn more about.
  • Click Copy Image Address in the right-click menu.
  • Go to https://images.google.com/
  • Click the Search by Image button, which looks like a camera.
  • Paste the image address into the search box.
  • Click Search by Image to view similar images found elsewhere online.
  • Click any one of the images that appears to see more information about it.
  • Click Visit Page to see the website where the image is posted.

Image Search with TinEye

TinEye is another popular tool for finding similar images online.

  • Right click on the photo you want to learn more about.
  • Click Copy Image Address in the right-click menu.
  • Go to https://www.tineye.com/
  • Paste the image address into the search box.
  • Click the Search button.
  • Click any of the results to compare it to the image you found on Facebook.
  • Click the link next to any image to see the site where it originated.
