No matter what type of music you're using be sure you have permission from its creator.

Late in 2008 Warner Music Group -- one of the largest distributors of music in the world -- asked YouTube to remove all its songs from the online platform. That meant that everyone who had a WMG song featured in their video got a notice requiring them to remove the music from their video or face the consequences of violating WMG's copyright. That move was a big pain for anyone who had videos posted with WMG songs but YouTube found a somewhat adequate fix in its "AudioSwap" feature. By using AudioSwap, users can upload videos with music without fear of the wrath of WMG.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your YouTube account with your username and password.

    • 2

Click your username from the top right corner of the YouTube platform, then select "Videos" from the dropdown menu.

    • 3

Scroll through your video list until you find the video you want to add non-WMG music to. Click the down arrow next to "Insight," then click "Audio Swap."

    • 4

Scroll through the songs available on the AudioSwap platform until you find one you like. Select the song you want and click "Preview" to see how it will look with your video.

    • 5

Click "Publish" to swap the current audio with the new song you've chosen.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add non-WMG music to a video from your video editing program as well; simply place the audio on your video timeline and export the video and audio together. Then upload it using YouTube's video uploader. Just be sure you have the proper permission to use the owner's music or you may be in violation of the owner's copyright.

  • Be careful when you use AudioSwap. Once you've chosen a track and selected "Publish" you cannot go back to the original audio.
