How to Arrange a Blanket on a Sofa

A blanket serves as a cozy and decorative sofa accessory.

Displaying a blanket on a couch adds a decorative and practical feature to the room. The blanket serves as a throw on chilly days and gives the room a new look and added color. Positioning the blanket depends on how you want to use or display the blanket. Trying out more than one look can help you choose the most attractive and convenient place for the blanket. During colder seasons for the holidays, a blanket on your sofa can be especially inviting.

Instructions

1. Fold the blanket in half horizontally and then neatly fold it vertically in thirds or fourths to create a rectangle. Drape it over one arm of the sofa to serve as a throw. Informal placement of the blanket makes it handy to use during cold weather.

2. Fold a square blanket in half to create a triangle and drape the folded blanket over the back of the sofa with the fold hanging over the back and the triangle's point aiming down at the seat. This position works well for woven and decorative blankets. The blanket covers a great deal of the back of the couch to add more color to the room, and also serves as a cover to easily pull down over someone resting on the sofa. It's also easy to pull the back corners of the blanket over your shoulders for warmth while sitting on the couch.

3. Match up the two long ends of a rectangular blanket and hang the blanket over the back of the sofa, with the fold behind the sofa. Adjust the blanket, so the edge reaches the seat fully covering the couch's back, if the blanket is more for display than use. You can tuck the edge between the back and the seat.

Tips & Warnings

• Check the colorfastness of new or handwoven blankets. Some textiles can transfer color to your couch. Dip an unobtrusive corner of the blanket in cold water and dab it with a white rag to see if the color bleeds. Pre-wash the blanket according to the maker's instructions before using it. Check again for colorfastness before arranging the blanket on the couch.
