How to Fastboot on a Mac

Disable memory-hogging applications to maintain your Mac's fastboot performance.

The fast boot feature on Macintosh computers significantly shortens the time the computer typically takes to load the desktop and background applications while starting up. Although fast boot is intended for quickly accessing your computer, some background applications may slow down the startup process if they require a significant amount of memory. By disabling startup items on your Mac, you decrease the amount of time it takes to load your computer and free up the total memory used to run the desktop or laptop.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Apple" at the top of the Mac's desktop menu and click "System Preferences."

    • 2

Click "View" at the top of the System Preferences menu and click "Accounts." Click your user account and click "Login Items."

    • 3

Click the login item you wish to remove from the startup menu and click "-" to remove it.

    • 4

Type your administrator password in the pop-up password menu to confirm the deletion.

    • 5

Click "Apple" on the desktop and click "Shut Down." Press "Power" on the computer once the computer has completely shut down to run the fast boot feature.

    • 6

Enter your administrator password to log in to your account and load the desktop.
