How to Make a Roof Door in "Minecraft"
"Minecraft" is a sandbox computer game that allows players to creatively alter the world to build houses, mine resources and even create entire villages and cities. For many players, one of the important parts of the game is building a house for their character. These houses often have a bed, storage space and decorations and may lead to that character’s mine or farms. One housing option is to create an underground house with a door in the roof. An underground house is hidden from sight but the trap door lets you access the home. You can use a hatch, or a trapdoor and ladder, to create a roof door.
Instructions

-
1
Finish the house for your "Minecraft" character. Use a flat surface for the roof.
-
2
Open your crafting window.
-
-
3
Place two wooden planks, one on top of the other, in your crafting window. This gives you four sticks. Six sticks lets you build two ladder pieces. If you have a tall house, repeat this step several times to make sure you have enough ladder pieces.
-
4
Right-click on the crafting table to open your 3-by-3 crafting window.
-
5
Place sticks in the window in the following configuration: Rows 1 and 3 contain a stick, nothing and then another stick. Row 2 has nothing, a stick and then nothing. This creates two ladder pieces. Depending on the height of your house, you may need to repeat Step 3 to make more ladder pieces.
-
6
Place the ladder up against a wall on the inside of your house. Check that the ladder extends all the way up to the roof.
-
7
Craft a hatch by opening your crafting table and placing three wooden planks in a row and three more in the row below it.
-
8
Climb up your ladder to the roof. Hold the shift key to avoid falling down the ladder and remove the block of the roof directly above the ladder.
-
9
Go through this hole in the ceiling. Place the hatch into the hole.
-
10
Right-click on the hatch to open the roof door, climb down onto the ladder, then close the hatch behind you.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of having a ladder that goes all the way to the roof of your house, you can build more attractive stairs that lead to a ladder. You can create a roof that can be retracted with pistons. This complicated process can involve dozens of pieces including pistons, sticky pistons, redstone, redstone torches, repeaters and buttons, and may require dozens or hundreds of steps to complete.
While working on a ladder, hold "Shift" to avoid falling. Your character will automatically descend a ladder when he is not climbing it.
