Directions to the Foam Circle Friendship Bracelet Maker

Friendship bracelets are traditionally braided by anchoring one end and crossing or knotting the strands in a particular order. Kits are sold that include foam circles that are used to make friendship bracelets quickly without learning the particular braid. This method of making friendship bracelets is used both by younger children who do not have the dexterity and understanding to braid, and by teens and adults who prefer using the tool to hand-braiding. The same technique can be done with a homemade cardboard circle with the center cut out and eight notches cut around the outside.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 24 inches of each color of embroidery floss and cut. You should have seven 24-inch peices of floss. Lay all seven strands together, and line up the ends. Tie a knot 1 inch from the end of the strands.

    • 2

Slide the loose ends of the strands through the hole in the center of the foam disc, and pull until the knot is just on the other side of the disc. Slip one strand into each notch, leaving the top slot open.

    • 3

Lift the strand at the bottom right of the disc, the five o'clock position. Move this strand to the empty top spot, and turn the disc so that the new empty notch is at the top. Repeat until the bracelet is long enough.

    • 4

Remove the bracelet from the disc by lifting all of the strands from the slots and pulling the bracelet from the back of the foam disc.

    • 5

Tie an overhand knot to secure the braiding. Tie the bracelet around your wrist.
