Turn t-shirts into yarn for a crocheted basket.

Crocheting with fabric yarn and a very large hook makes fast work of your projects. Because of the large stitches, this type of crochet produces eye-catching work. The t-shirt material is soft and comes in a variety of colors. Find t-shirts in your own closet, or look in thrift stores or garage sales, to crochet a basket from torn t-shirts.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the body of a t-shirt into a 1-inch wide strip. Start by making a 1-inch cut up from the bottom hem, and cut in a spiral around to the armpits, keeping to a 1-inch width. Continue in this manner until you have cut about 2 yards of t-shirt material into fabric yarn, or have used between four and six t-shirts. Tie a small, tight knot to attach the second piece to the first. Roll the fabric yarn into a ball.

    • 2

Chain three using a size Q crochet hook at the fabric yarn. Single crochet 12 times in the first chain stitch. This is round one.

    • 3

Single crochet twice in each stitch around for round two. Single crochet once in each stitch around for rows three, four and five.

    • 4

Single crochet in the next stitch, then single crochet twice in the next. Repeat this pattern around for row six. Single crochet once in each stitch around for rows seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven.

    • 5

Single crochet, skip two stitches and double crochet four times in the next stitch. Skip two stitches. Repeat this pattern around for row eleven. Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave the end of the fabric yarn into the basket.

    • 6

Use more of the fabric yarn to chain 30, leaving a 12-inch tail at the beginning of the row. Single crochet in each stitch across. Chain one, then turn and single crochet in each stitch across again. Repeat one more time. Tie off, leaving a 12-inch tail of yarn. You should have a 12-inch tail at either end of this row of stitches. Use the tails to attach the row of stitches as a handle to the basket. Insert the hook through one of the stitches on row eleven of the basket, and pull one yarn tail through. Make single crochet stitches across the end of the handle, attaching it to the basket. Repeat on the other side.
