1
Make a DIY pattern by using one of your child’s old shirts. Use a seam ripper to take the shirt apart. Trace the pieces of the shirt onto pattern paper. Leave at least a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Make the pattern before you buy the fabric because this will give you an idea of how much fabric you will need for the shirt. Amounts of fabric needed will vary depending on the size of the child.

2
Trace the body on the fold of the fabric. Follow the traced lines and cut the piece. Cutting on folded fabric yields two pieces. One piece will be the front of the shirt and one will be the back of the shirt.

3
Pin the pieces right-sides together at the shoulder. Sew the shoulders and sides together. Make sure that you leave an opening for the neckline, armholes and body of the shirt.
-
4
Pin the side pieces right-sides together. Leave an opening where the arms of the garment will be attached on both sides.
-
5
Pin the sleeves right-sides together. Leave openings for the arm holes.
-
6
Turn the sleeves right-side out. Pin them to the armholes of the inside-out shirt. Sew the sleeves to the body of the shirt.
