How to Add Annotations to Someone Else's YouTube Video

Annotations can add another layer to the experience of watching a YouTube video.

YouTube's Annotations feature allows video owners to add notes and special features to their videos at strategic places. If you're the owner of a YouTube video, the process is fairly straightforward; if you want to add annotations to someone else's video, however, you'll have to have permission to log in as owner of the YouTube video and then proceed with the Annotations process. If that's not possible, the only other option is to download and then re-upload the video to your own YouTube Channel. Keep in mind that doing this without the permission of the original owner is likely a copyright violation. To get a firm idea of the rules, check out YouTube's "Copyright Tips" and "Community Guidelines" pages.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the YouTube video to which you want to add annotations. Click "Share" under the video, and then copy the URL that appears.

    • 2

Navigate to KeepVId.com and paste the video's URL into the box near the top of the window. Then click "Download."

    • 3

Click "Allow" to allow the Applet access to your computer, and then click "Download MP4" at the next screen. The video will be saved to your computer as a .mp4 file.

    • 4

Log in to your YouTube account and click "Upload" from the main page. Select the video file from the files or folders on your computer, and allow the video to upload to your YouTube account.

    • 5

Click your YouTube username from the top right of the YouTube platform, and then select "My Videos."

    • 6

Locate the video from the list of your videos. Click the down arrow next to "Insight" on the video you want to annotate, and then select "Annotations."

    • 7

Select the type of annotation you want to add to the video from the "Add Annotation" box on the right. Selections include "Speech Bubble," "Spotlight," "Note," "Pause" and "Title."

    • 8

Move the selected annotation to the place where you want it included in the video.

    • 9

Click "Save," and then "Publish" from the top right of the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to add more than one annotation, be sure to add them before you select "Publish."

  • Be sure to ask the video's owner whether you can annotate the video before you download it.

  • YouTube's Community Guidelines apply to text as well as video; review them before annotating any video.
