How to Get Dreads Tighter on Your Scalp

How to Get Dreads Tighter on Your Scalp thumbnail
As your dreadlocks grow out, you must continously maintain them for maximum tightness.

Hair close to the scalp is the last part of hair to tighten when you are creating dreads. To make matters worse, as your hair is growing, it will naturally grow straight, causing the part of the dreadlocks closest to the scalp to almost always be straighter and looser than the rest of the dreads. This is normal, but if your dreads are too loose, there are products and techniques you can use to tighten them so you can have beautiful dreads in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place small rubber bands at the scalp of each of your dreadlocks before you wash your hair. This will help keep the dreads from loosening.

    • 2

Cut the legs off a pair of pantyhose and place the pantie part on your head before you wash your hair. Wet the hair and rub some plain, Castile soap on your head to wash the hair. Rinse out the soap. Remove the nylon pantyhose.

    • 3

Squeeze the water out of your dreadlocks just as you would squeeze water out of a sponge. Squeeze out as much as possible. Place a towel over your head and continue to squeeze the dreadlocks with the towel.

    • 4

Remove the rubber bands and spray a locking accelerator on the part of the dreads you want to tighten near your scalp. If the rest of the dreads need to be tightened, spray the entire lengths of the dreadlocks. Allow the dreads to dry completely.

    • 5

Rub the dreads in a clockwise motion against your scalp to tighten them. Use a clockwise motion as that's the way most hair grows on your scalp. This will cause it to lock up and tighten.

    • 6

Twist the dreads near your scalp between your hands to lock them even tighter. Place one dread between your palms and roll it back and forth as if you were playing with clay.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your hair no more frequently than once a week with a plain soap.

  • Avoid conditioners and shampoos with conditioners as they will soften your hair and loosen the dreads.
