A small Bible adds a symbolic touch to a funeral wreath.

Funeral wreaths with Styrofoam are often created as a gift for a loved one of the deceased. A homemade wreath is less expensive than one you purchase and it allows you to add your creativity to personalize the craft. Many people attach a note on the back that indicates it is to go to an individual family member after the services are over. This is a long-lasting memorial to remind the person of how much you cared for the deceased.

  • Silk or plastic flowers, large and small

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any packaging on the wreath.

    • 2

Pick fabric ribbon and flowers in colors that coordinate. Pastel colors work well for a funeral, but you can use colors that were meaningful to the deceased if you desire. Another option is to coordinate it with the style and colors in the home of the person for whom it is a gift.

    • 3

Wind the fabric ribbon around the Styrofoam wreath. Do this so the edges slightly overlap to cover the foam base. Attach the ribbon to the Styrofoam every 3 inches or 4 inches with the low temperature glue gun.

    • 4

Clip the ribbon with scissors once the wreath is covered. Do this so the ribbon end winds up in the back of the wreath. Glue it on with the glue gun.

    • 5

Remove the flower blossoms from the stems. Do this by using the wire cutters and clipping just beneath the flower.

    • 6

Glue the flowers in place around the ribbon covered wreath. For the most attractive look, alternate small and large flowers.

    • 7

Add a symbolic embellishment to the wreath.with the glue gun. Wise options are a small Bible, faux dove or other religious symbol. Another idea is to add a symbol that reflects the life of the deceased. For instance, if the deceased was an avid fan of the Tennessee Volunteers football team, it is appropriate to decorate the wreath with the orange color, a plastic football or other meaningful objects.

    • 8

Cut a piece of fishing line with the scissors. Make it about 1 foot long. Push one end through the center of the wreath. Bring the ends together at the top of the wreath. Create a knot to form a transparent hanger. This enables the person to hang it on a nail on the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many funeral homes have easels sitting around where you can place the funeral wreath during the service. If not, ask someone in charge, he will know how to display it properly.

  • A regular hot glue gun also works on Styrofoam wreaths. Use with caution since it may cause melting of the foam if held too long in one spot or too much glue is used.
