How to Edge Thin Leather

Use an edge beveler when making a leather belt.

Edging thin leather can turn a standard material into an eye-catching item. The trick to edging leather is to create a smooth cut without damaging the existing material. Employing an edge beveler is the essential tool for finishing the trim on any piece of leather. The edge beveler is specifically designed with a V-shaped head fitted with razors. The tool catches the edge of the leather trim in its grasp and gently peels away the edges to give the fabric a slick look.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the leather strip onto a flat work surface. Adjust the strip so one of the short ends is facing you.

    • 2

Place the V-shaped head of the edge beveler against the bottom, right corner of the fabric. Hold the leather strip steady with your free hand. Angle the edge beveler at a 45-degree angle. Purchase an edge beveler at your local leather or fabric supply store.

    • 3

Push the edge beveler straight up the edge of the fabric with slow, gentle and steady pressure. Complete the trimming in one motion. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for all remaining edges -- top and bottom -- of the fabric.

    • 4

Buff the fabric clean with leather polish and a microfiber cloth.
