How to Make Twisted Yarn Strands

A twisted yarn strand is a type of twisted rope made from two or more strands of yarn, which can be purchased at nearly any craft or sewing store. The resulting twisted cord is stronger than a single piece of yarn, and can be used for decorative purposes, such as a curtain tie, a bag strap or a cord around a jelly jar. You can make your own twisted yarn strand with the aid of a friend and basic craft supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two yarn strands of equal length; these strands should be three times longer than the length of twisted cord you require. For example, if you need a yard of twisted yarn, you should use three yard strands.

    • 2

      Place the two strands side-by-side.

    • 3

Hold one end of the strands, and have a friend hold the other end. Twist your end of the yarn while your friend holds the yarn still until the strands begin to bunch and roll in on each other.

    • 4

Bring your end to your friend's end so that the twisted strands are folded in half. Grasp your friend's end and hold it next to yours. The yarn will twist and fold together. Once it has finished twisting in onto itself, tie the two ends you are holding, both your end and your friend's end, together.

Shake the cord, then pull it through your hand several times to work out any bunched-up areas. The cord is finished when it is smooth. Leave the yarn tied until you're ready to use it in a craft or sewing project, otherwise it may become unraveled.
