How to Create a Cinema Room thumbnail
Turn any room into a home theater.

Create a cinema room in your home so your family and friends can enjoy movies in a room that feels like a real movie theater. Comfortable seating is crucial. Also, set up a small kitchenette in the room so that you don't have to leave the room to get a cold drink, coffee or snacks during a film. Consider a basement for a theater room as long as the basement is dry and warm. However, any room in the house will work as long as you create an appropriate atmosphere and have the right audiovisual equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the room you have chosen for a home theater with dark paint. Opt for flat-finish paint rather than gloss or semigloss paint. Paint the ceiling black. The wall color could be a dark maroon, a very dark eggplant, a dark brown or very dark shade of grey.

    • 2

Choose your audiovideo system equipment for the room. Anything from a large flat screen TV to a screen projector system will work. Consider installing surround sound and remote-control options. Other options include a DVR/cable box and battery backups to protect the equipment.

Decide where you want the furniture to be placed. The TV/screen should not be near a door. Decide on tiered seating or one big, comfy couch with foot rests/stools. Seating should be in front of the TV/projector screen. Build a riser out of plywood to create another seating level.

Choose lighting that is appropriate for a theater room. Although you want to keep the room as dark as possible, you can add a rope light of clear lights along crown molding to create a cinema atmosphere. Another option is to position red rope lights along the base trim in the room to simulate theater aisle lights. Use a remote control to alter dimmer lights in the room.

    • 5

Hang shades or drapes that block out all light so that you are able to watch a movie any time of the day. Opt for curtains made of thick, luxurious material to give the room a real theater feel. Add a popcorn machine or place a microwave in the room to make popcorn.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your theater room is right next to a room where you might disturb someone else, consider installing acoustical paneling to the walls. This will improve the audio quality and also provide soundproofing.
