How to Crochet Tighter
When you first learn to crochet, maintaining consistent tension can be difficult. Hook size, yarn type and your method of holding the yarn all play a role in determining the size of your stitches. If your stitches are too loose, you may find that your projects turn out larger than the suggested gauge. By wrapping your yarn around your index finger and holding your finger straight, you will be able to control the tension more effectively.

1
Choose a hook that is at least one size smaller than recommended for the yarn if you find that your projects consistently go over gauge. Sometimes going down in hook size is all that is required to solve the problem of loose stitches.
-
2
Extend the index finger of your left hand.

-
3
Wrap the yarn over your finger with the short end to the front and the ball to the back.
-
4
Close your ring and pinkie fingers around the yarn coming off the skein. Use your thumb and middle finger to hold on to your work.
-
5
Control the tension by lifting your index finger higher or lower than your middle finger. When you lift your finger, the yarn is stretched taut, which creates a tighter tension. When you lower your finger, there is more slack in the yarn, and your stitches are looser.
