How to Remove the Glass Cooktop on a GE Electric Range

GE electric ranges have either metal coil burners or a glass cooktop with burners under the glass. The glass cooktop is resilient, able to withstand the weight of many heavy objects on top of it. However, the cooktop may become damaged if heavy items are dragged across or dropped on it. If the cooktop is damaged, you must discontinue use until it is replaced. If you choose to replace the cooktop yourself, first you have to remove the old one. Once the removal process is understood, installing the new cooktop is just as easy as reversing the removal steps. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the range breaker in your service panel to disconnect the range's power supply.

    • 2

Open the oven door. Remove the screws located on the bottom of the front of the glass cooktop. Close the oven door.

    • 3

Lift the cooktop up, and support it using a dowel rod. If a helper is available, ask him to hold the cooktop up, as this is more secure than a dowel rod.

    • 4

Remove the screws and brackets securing each burner to the underside of the cooktop.

    • 5

Lift the cooktop up and off the range.
