A neck roll pillow can also be used for lower back support.

Decorative neck roll pillows look good and help support the neck when you are reclining. The size of the neck roll depends on your preference. There are standard size pillow forms, but you can easily make a larger or smaller roll to suit your needs. Instructions

    • 1

Cut two circle end pieces that are 1 inch larger than the circumference of your pillow. Round dishes often make easy circle templates.

    • 2

Cut one rectangular piece of fabric that is 1 inch larger than the length you want and 1 inch larger than the circumference of your pillow.

    • 3

Place your fabric pieces decorative side up on the table. Arrange your trims on the fabrics in the position you prefer. Pin the trim to the fabric. Welting is sewn into seams, but all other trims usually sew directly to the surface of the fabric. Welting is cord with fabric wrapped over the cord.

    • 4

Sew your trims to your fabrics. Allow for 1/2-inch seams on all fabric edges. Fold your rectangular section in half along its width. Sew a 1/2-inch seam from the end to the 4-inch mark. Repeat for the other end. This will leave an opening in the middle of the seam.

    • 5

Cut V-shaped notches 1/4-inch deep around the curved circles every inch. This will ease the curve. Pin the circular end piece and the horizontal midsection face sides together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Sew the seam. Repeat for each end. Turn the pillow cover right sides out.

Stuff the pillow cover with a neck roll pillow form or with fiberfill. Hand sew the opening closed using needle and thread and a cast over stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add welting, sew the welting to the circle covers with the cord facing the center of the circle. Start 1 inch from the end of the welting and end 1 inch from where you started. Open the welting seam 1 inch and trim just the cord to butt against the starting cord. Fold the welting fabric over and cover the joint where the welting meets. Finish sewing.
