How to Fix the Dome in a Pendulum Clock
Pendulum clocks that have domes are called 400-day anniversary clocks because they have to be wound only once every 400 days. The clock’s face, pendulum and gears are exposed, thus the need for a dome to keep out dust and dirt. Handling the domes to clean them or to wind the clock should be done carefully because they are very fragile. However, accidents do happen and domes get broken, chipped and cracked. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Ensure the clock rests on a stable piece of furniture. A wobbly table or uneven surface will not only cause the pendulum in the clock to lean, but can possibly lead to the table being bumped and the clock being knocked over.
-
2
Examine how the dome rests on the base of the clock. The base should have a round groove that the dome fits into snugly to ensure the entire unit is stable.

3
Research the glue you’re going to use by visiting craft stores or websites. Instant glues that contain cyanoacrylate cure fast, dry instantly and bond well.
-
4
Inspect your plastic dome. If there is only a small chip near the rim, it will be covered up when it fits into the base of the clock. If there is a crack, carefully ply the crack apart and apply glue to each side of the crack with a toothpick. Hold the crack together according to the glue label’s instructions. Quickly wipe off any excess glue with a small damp cloth.

5
Inspect your glass dome. If there is only a small chip near the rim, consider yourself lucky because the rim is always hidden when it fits into the base of the clock. However, if there is a major crack in the glass, there is little that can be done to repair it.
-
6
Use a toothpick to apply glue to the edges of pieces of glass that have broken off. Apply glue to the edges of the break in the dome. Place the broken piece back in the dome and hold it there according to the glue label’s instructions. Quickly and carefully wipe off any excess glue with a small damp cloth.

Tips & Warnings
Attach clear tape to a crack to prevent it from getting worse. This can be a permanent solution if you apply the tape carefully to make it inconspicuous.
If you can live with the crack in the dome, place the clock against the wall with the crack in the dome facing the wall to make it less obvious.
If you cannot live with the crack in the dome, pay a visit to clock repair shops and websites. They may not be able to help you fix the dome, but they may be able to order a new dome for you.
Always work in a well-ventilated area when using instant glue.
Always wear tight rubber gloves when working with quick-drying instant glue to avoid gluing yourself to other things.
