How to Make a Mitered Corner Baby Blanket
Baby blankets are thoughtful gifts for a new mom or dad. Mitered corners are the key to making your baby blanket look clean and professional. You can make a mitered corner by using a silk blanket binding. Once you master the technique you can add mitered corners to all of the quilts and blankets you make.

1
Wash and dry your fabric to prevent shrinkage and bleeding after you have assembled the blanket. Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles.
-
2
Cut a piece of fabric to the size you want the blanket to be. Use a measuring tape to make sure the blanket is square. Cut a second blanket piece the same size as the first out of a complementary fabric color or pattern.

3
Lay your first blanket piece wrong-side up, then lay the second blanket piece right-side up on top of the first blanket piece. Trim any areas where the two blanket pieces do not match up. Pin the two pieces together.
-
4
Sew the two blanket pieces together using a straight stich, removing the pins as you go. Trim any thread tails.
-
5
Lay your blanket on a flat surface.
-
6
Open your binding package. Starting at one corner of your blanket, fit the blanket into the fold of the binding, lining up the end of the binding with the corner of the blanket. Pin the binding into place.
-
7
Smooth the binding along the blanket edge, pinning the binding in place every 2 to 3 inches, until you reach the first corner.
-
8
Hold the binding in place with the thumb and pointer finger of your dominant hand. Put the thumb of your nondominant hand in between the fold of the binding just past the corner of the blanket. Pinch the binding toward your dominant hand, making a floppy triangle on either side of the blanket. Remove your thumb and fold the triangles over so that the bottom of the triangle is even with the bottom of the binding. Pin the mitered edge into place. Smooth the binding over the next edge of the blanket and repeat the mitering at each corner, pinning in place as you go.
-
9
Sew the binding into place with a straight stich, removing the pins as you go, all the way around the blanket.
-
10
Place the tip of one corner under your sewing machine foot and sew a straight stich along the miter to secure it in place. Trim any excess thread.
