How to Cover Walls With Gossamer for a Wedding

Gossamer flows softly like wedding veils.

Gossamer is a thin fabric that is commonly used in weddings as bows and swags, but it can also be used to cover unsightly walls. This sheer fabric allows you to add romance to your space by bringing soft color to the walls. Dress it up with holiday lights that can shine through the fabric. Use a color that matches your wedding color scheme or stick to a neutral such as white or beige.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the walls. Purchase 1 1/2 times as much gossamer as you need to cover the width. For example, if a wall measures 20 feet long, purchase enough gossamer to cover 30 feet. This allows you to gather the fabric for a more appealing look.

    • 2

Cut the gossamer into panels long enough to cover the wall from top to bottom, plus 2 inches. Fold an inch over the top and sew it down, creating a hollow pocket through which to slide hanging wire or a curtain rod. If you're using large, decorative rods, make the pocket larger to accommodate them.

    • 3

Climb a ladder and attach eye hooks or curtain rod hooks at the top of the wall. The eye hooks typically screw in by hand, but you'll need a screwdriver for the curtain rods. Attach more eye hooks every 10 feet, or install more curtain rod supports at the distance necessary to accommodate the length of your curtain rod. Continue this around the room.

    • 4

String your gossamer panels onto hanging wire or curtain rods and scrunch the fabric together to create gathers. The wire should be about 11 feet long, which should hold 4 gathered 3-foot-wide panels. Wind each end of the wire securely through the eye hooks. For curtain rods, attach them to the installed supports.

    • 5

Create a gossamer design on your wall by draping a long panel of gossamer from a C-hook. Attach the C-hook to the top center of the wall and hang the center of the panel on the hook. Attach two more C-hooks several feet to each side, and drape the fabric over to the C-hooks. Allow the ends to hang to the floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your reception location's management before installing anything on the walls. Some venues don't allow wall decorations; some have eye hooks already installed.
