How to Embroider Beanie Hats
After you finish knitting or crocheting a beanie, add some visual interest to your work with a small cross-stitched or embroidered design. Some knitting and crochet stitches are easy to embroider on, with their even stitches. If you have made a beanie for a small child, add a favorite cartoon character to the beanie; do the same for a beanie you made for an older teen. As you embroider or cross-stitch the design, remember not to knot the floss, as this will leave an unsightly lump showing on the front of the beanie.
Things You'll Need
- Tapestry needle
- Small piece of yarn
- Cross-stitch pattern
- Embroidery floss
Instructions
-
-
1
Thread a tapestry needle with the yarn.
-
2
Fold the beanie in half lengthwise, then widthwise. Mark the center point with the yarn. Cut the yarn so only a 3-inch length remains on the beanie as a marker.
-
-
3
Read the cross-stitch pattern and located the center of the design. Count the design squares down from the center to the bottom row, then over to the first square of the design on the left edge.
-
4
Count down the same number of rows on the beanie, then to the left – one stitch per design square. Center the cross-stitch design on the front of the beanie by counting down from the center, then to the left. Mark the spot on the beanie with a short length of yarn.

5
Cut an 18-inch length of embroidery floss, then separate three strands from the six-strand length. Thread the three strands onto the embroidery needle. Beginning at the bottom left of the cross-stitch design, stitch it onto the beanie. Change embroidery floss colors as indicated by the cross-stitch design.
-
6
End the last stitch of the design by pushing the needle to the inside of the beanie. Run the needle under several cross-stitches, going back and forth to secure the floss. Cut the floss as close to the beanie as possible.
