DIY Knobs for a Toy Stove

A real stove can't be operated without knobs, and children will notice if one is broken or missing from their toy. Whether you're making a handmade toy stove or restoring a store-bought one, knobs must work and be attached. Knobs that actually turn can be made using the tools in your garage and some leftover scraps you have from a different project. Attention to detail is the key to any project and operable knobs are sure to bring a smile to your child's face.

Things You'll Need

• Drill
• Door knob bit
• Sandpaper
• Acrylic paint
• Paintbrush
• Sealer (optional)
• Metallic paint pen
• Drill bit
• Bolts and nuts
• Industrial strength glue

Instructions

1. Attach a 2-inch hole saw, commonly known as a door knob drill bit to your drill.

2. Drill through three-quarter inch plywood five times to make a 2-inch round knob for each stove element and the oven. Sand the edges of the knobs smooth to prevent splinters.

3. Paint the knobs black using acrylic paint. Use a metallic paint pen and mark straight lines on your knobs to mimic the lines on your stove knobs. Consider sealing the project with a top coat to make the knobs washable.

4. Switch to a drill bit to the size of your bolt hardware. Drill an impression in the center-back of each knob. Fill the impression with industrial strength glue and set the head of the bolt inside. Let the knobs dry over night.

5. Drill a hole through the stove in the position for each knob. Insert the bolt and tighten the nut.

Tips & Warnings

• Use metallic spray or acrylic paint to make the knobs look like stainless steel.

• Use lock washers to stabilize the knobs and keep them from coming off.
