Painting on Illustration Board With Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paints are very versatile; they offer artists many options in colors and consistency of paint as well as the types of surface to which you can apply the paints. Illustration board is one surface you can use with acrylic paints. The board is finished on one side and has some type of stiff backing on the other, frequently pulpwood. You can paint on illustration board with acrylics much the same way you would paint on any other type of canvas.
Instructions

1
Set up a jar of water, your brushes, your palette, your acrylic paint and your illustration board in a well-lit room.
-
2
Sketch your drawing onto a separate piece of paper first since it is difficult to erase on a larger drawing area.
-
-
3
Transfer your drawing onto the illustration board with a pencil. You can transfer the drawing by using transfer paper, a projector or freehand.
-
4
Spray your illustration board with hairspray to keep the pencil from smearing or mixing with your paints.
-
5
Paint on a piece of cardboard or separate piece of paper if you’ve never used acrylics before so you can get a feel for how they appear.
-
6
Squeeze some paint out of the tube onto a palette and start painting. You can dilute the paint with water or an acrylic medium to make it thinner. Using water may result in the paint pooling or flowing more on your painting.
-
7
Rinse your brushes in between colors in the jar of water. Rinse them with soap and water once you are finished with your painting.
-
8
Rinse a separate jar out with water and mix the correct amount of varnish and water according to the directions for your varnish.
-
9
Lay your painting flat once it is completely dry.
-
10
Dip your brush into the varnish about one-third to one-fourth of the length of the brush and tap the brush on the end of the jar.
-
11
Hold the brush at an angle and apply the varnish in even strokes in the same direction across the painting. Start at the corner of your painting and work across. Let it dry for a few hours.
